The Parent visa is for parents who wish to migrate to Australia to be with their children. The application must be sponsored by one of their children who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen and is settled in Australia.
Parent visas are initially based on a 'balance of family' (BOF) test.
The 'balance of family' (BOF) test requires that 50% or more of the applicant's children must be 'settled' in Australia as permanent residents, Australian citizen or eligible New Zealand citizen. It disqualifies a lot of people from the parent visa category. Applicants are also required to satisfy health and character requirements and provide Assurance of Support (AoS).
Under the standard parent visa, limited number of visas are granted every financial year. Once all the requirements for the grant of parent visa are fulfilled, eligible parentsmake an application and then wait for approximately 30- 40 years in the queue to be assessed.
While waiting for an offshore Parent visa to be processed, the parents can apply for a Tourist visa to visit their children in Australia.
If one of the parents is aged 65 years or over, and they enter Australia on a visa that allows them to lodge a parent visa onshore (that is, a visitor or tourist visa WITHOUT the 8503 "No Further Stay" condition), and meets the 'balance of family' test (50% or more of the applicant's children must be 'settled' in Australia as permanent residents, Australian citizen or eligible New Zealand citizen), the parents can lodge an Aged Parent Visa application whilst living in Australia.
The Contributory Parent visa involves making a deposit to the Australian government. This amount is AUD$43,600 per migrating parent. This visa is processed in approximately 24- 36 months and the parent/s will become a permanent resident when the payment is made. The contributory amounts are requested once the parents have passed health and police checks.
The Contributory Parent visa category also has two different pathways:
Once the visa is granted, applicants would have access to Medicare and full work and travel rights.
