Skills in Demand visa (SID) (subclass 482)

The SID (subclass 482) visa is a temporary visa that permits the holder to live in Australia, while working full-time for the sponsoring employer, in a nominated occupation which is listed on the Core Skills Occupations List (CSOL).

Depending on your occupation and skills, the SID visa lets you work in Australia for up to four years and allows you to travel to and from Australia throughout its duration. It also allows your family members to work and study here.

The employer-sponsored visa programme involves a 3-stage application process, all of which must be approved for a successful application.

These are as follows:

  1. Sponsorship application
  2. Nomination application
  3. Visa application.

Visa Requirements

To apply for the Skills in Demand (SID) visa subclass 482, you must be sponsored by an approved employer to work in an eligible skilled occupation and meet key criteria under one of the three SID streams (Specialist Skills, Core Skills or Essential Skills):

  • You must be nominated by an approved employer in an eligible occupation on the relevant SID occupation list for your stream

  • You must have at least 1 year of relevant full‑time (or equivalent part‑time) work experience in your nominated occupation or a closely related role, generally within the last 5 years

  • You must be paid at or above the applicable minimum income threshold for your SID stream and meet market salary requirements

  • You must meet English language requirements, unless an exemption applies

  • You must hold adequate health insurance (if required) and satisfy health and character requirements

  • You must have the necessary skills and qualifications and, where required, a suitable skills assessment for the nominated occupation

The SID 482 visa is designed to provide a clearer pathway to permanent residence, with many sponsored workers able to transition after at least 2 years of qualifying employment in Australia in the same employer‑sponsored role, subject to meeting the criteria for the relevant permanent employer‑sponsored visa at the time.
